The transition to post—quantum cryptography from the field of promising developments to the plane of technological necessity is not a question of the future, but of the present. A quantum computer with a capacity of 1 million qubits may be enough to crack classical cryptosystems — 20 times less than previously assumed. Anton Guglya, CEO of the qApp developer company, told Izvestia about this on July 25.

"We already understand that traffic can be intercepted for the future, with an eye to decryption in the future, when quantum capacities become available. The protection of information with a long lifecycle should begin not at the moment of the threat, but long before it," said Google.

He stressed that the threats of quantum attacks concern not only government agencies and large corporations: private users are also vulnerable.

"Now is the time when each of us can and should begin minimal training. This is not about urgently switching to some special solutions, but about a sound approach to digital hygiene. <...> Therefore, all information that has a long shelf life or long-term significance should be protected more seriously today. This is especially important for businesses and the state, but private users should also keep this in mind," the expert explained.

According to the expert, special attention should be paid to their own competencies. It is not necessary to become a cryptographer, but a basic understanding of the principles of encryption and cybersecurity threats is no longer an option, but a necessity.

"An important step is to monitor the emergence of new applications and services with support for post—quantum cryptography. Pilot projects are already underway in Russia to integrate such mechanisms into messengers and cloud storage. They haven't been certified yet, but it's only a matter of time before standards are being developed, and with their adoption, mass adoption will begin," added Google.

The specialist also recommended not postponing the transition to modern protective equipment, even if they are not yet post-quantum. Using up—to-date encryption protocols, two-factor authentication, and abandoning outdated messengers and five-character passwords is not a panic, but basic digital hygiene, which is already working and definitely won't hurt in the future.

Rayevsky told what users should do to stop possible surveillance through smart devices. According to the expert, vulnerabilities appear in the devices during operation, which the manufacturer is in no hurry to eliminate. Fraudsters can take advantage of this by introducing special malicious software (software) into gadgets to collect information.
