Axios reports on the first official talks between Israel and Syria in 25 years
Israel and Syria have held the first official talks in 25 years on de-escalation of the conflict between the countries with the mediation of the United States. This was reported on July 25 by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"Senior Israeli and Syrian ministers met in Paris <...> under the auspices of the special envoy of the President [of the United States Donald] Trump, Tom Barrack, and discussed de-escalation of tensions between the two countries," the portal said in a statement.
According to Axios, this was not only the first official meeting in the last quarter of a century, but also the first negotiations between the parties after the crisis that broke out last week in the city of Suwayda in southern Syria, and the subsequent Israeli strikes on Damascus.
"I met with Syrians and Israelis in Paris tonight. Our goal was dialogue and de-escalation, and that's exactly what we achieved. All parties have confirmed their commitment to continue these efforts," Barrack wrote on the social network X.
Earlier, on July 17, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked the entrance to the Syrian General Staff in Damascus on the same day. Also on this day, an Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) struck the territory of the city of Jabla in Syria, killing 15 people.
On July 19, Israel and Syria agreed to a cease-fire with Washington's support. Barrack noted that the United States is calling on Druze, Bedouin and Sunni Muslims to lay down their arms in order to build a "new unified Syrian identity."
