The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation negatively assesses the adoption by the Israeli Parliament of the declaration on the extension of sovereignty to the territory of the West Bank of the Jordan River. This was announced on Thursday, July 24, on the agency's website.

On July 23, the Knesset approved a declaration calling on the Government to extend Israeli sovereignty to Jewish settlements in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. It clarifies that the document is advisory in nature and is not a law, but requires the authorities to speed up this process. The declaration calls the creation of a Palestinian State a threat to the security of Israel and the entire region.

"Such a step by the Israeli parliamentarians is negatively perceived in Moscow. It actually prejudges the outcome of negotiations on the final status of the Palestinian territories and runs counter to Israel's commitments under the Oslo Process, as well as the provisions of relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the UN Security Council," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Moscow believes that the key to stability in the Middle East is the creation of an independent Palestinian State that can peacefully coexist with Israel. At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry believes that in practice, Israel's decision on sovereignty over the West Bank is unlikely to be implemented.

"Otherwise, such actions will inevitably lead to an even greater escalation of tension in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone with difficult to predict consequences for both Israel itself and the entire Middle East," the ministry added.

On April 11, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that peace in the Middle East is impossible without the creation of an independent Palestinian state. He also called on all members of the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to take responsibility, "stop the bloodshed and support the Palestinian people."

The Guardian newspaper reported on April 30 that Britain and France were negotiating a possible recognition of Palestine. British Foreign Minister David Lammy recalled that Palestine has already been recognized by 160 states, which have recently been joined by Spain, Norway and Ireland.
