- The political scientist called the main breakthrough in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine
The main breakthrough during the third round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine was the agreement on the exchange of detained civilians. Political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko told about this on Thursday, July 24.
According to him, hundreds of people who sympathize or collaborated with Moscow still remain in Ukrainian prisons and pre-trial detention centers.
"I will remind you, for example, about [the Orthodox publicist] Dmitry Skvortsov, who has been arrested and is sitting in Kiev. And now, perhaps, the exchange of civilians will become systematic on a contractual basis," Bezpalko admitted in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The political scientist stated that neither Russia nor Ukraine still consider it possible to agree on the main issues of conflict resolution — a cease-fire, a meeting of top officials and territorial claims.
On the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said that China welcomes the consensus of Russia and Ukraine on the prisoner exchange. In addition, Guo Jiakun expressed hope for the desire of Moscow and Kiev for a political settlement of the conflict.
The third round of negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine ended on the evening of July 23, RT reports. The meeting of the delegations took place in the Chiragan Palace in Istanbul in a closed format and lasted about an hour. It was about the exchange of prisoners, civilians and the bodies of the dead, the NSN clarifies.
Following the talks, the head of the Russian delegation, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky, said that Russia had offered Ukraine the exchange of at least 1.2 thousand more prisoners of war from each side, according to the website. kp.ru . It also became known that Moscow and Kiev conducted a prisoner exchange according to the agreements reached in Istanbul on June 2.
