With the start of the summer season, thousands of Russians go hiking — from short walks in the woods to multi-day mountain expeditions. However, improperly selected equipment can not only spoil the impression of a holiday, but also endanger the health of tourists. Vladislav Moroz, the founder of the Red Fox outdoor brand, told Izvestia on July 25 how to properly prepare for the trip.

According to the expert, the first step is to clearly define the route and duration of the hike.

"For a one-day trip, it's enough to take a 20-liter light backpack with water and energy bars. A multi—day trek is quite another matter, where you will need a roomy backpack for 60-70 liters, a tent, a warm sleeping bag and a significant supply of provisions," said Moroz.

The specialist recommends paying special attention to the selection of clothes. Even in the height of summer, in mountainous areas or northern regions, night temperatures can drop sharply, and clear weather can suddenly give way to rain and strong winds.

"The ideal option is a three—layer system: thermal underwear to remove moisture, a fleece jacket to keep warm, and a membrane jacket to protect against the weather," the expert said.

A separate conversation is about shoes. Unsuitable shoes are one of the most common causes of injury and early completion of the route. Trekking boots with rigid ankle fixation are necessary for difficult hikes with a heavy backpack, whereas sneakers with embossed soles are sufficient for light walks. As for the backpack, here, according to Frost, the correct fit is of key importance.

"A good backpack should have a back ventilation system, adjustable straps and a waist belt that takes on the main load. Before buying, you should definitely try on several models to ensure a comfortable fit," Moroz added.

The minimum set of equipment for a one-day hike includes water, high-calorie snacks, a first-aid kit, a windproof jacket and a headlamp. If you plan to spend the night, the list expands significantly: you will need a tent, a sleeping bag with a suitable temperature regime, a camping torch and a supply of food.

On April 18, the Association of Travel Aggregators (ATAG) and booking services reported on the growing demand for travel with children. According to Tutu, such bookings have more than doubled for the May holidays and 2.6 times for the summer.
