The Great Choral Synagogue in St. Petersburg will be restored by 2028
The restoration of the Great Choral Synagogue, which is an object of cultural heritage of federal significance, has begun in St. Petersburg. It is planned to complete the work by the end of 2027, the city administration on the Neva River announced on Thursday, July 24.
The project provides for the restoration of the dome, restoration and repair of the roof, wooden and metal rafter system. Specialists will also put in order the basement, granite porch, plaster surfaces, brickwork, stucco decoration and columns of the entrance portal.
Builders are currently installing a temporary roof. The historical grilles from the windows and the visor have already been dismantled for restoration in the workshops, clarifies 78.ru .
"For St. Petersburg followers of one of the traditional religions of Russia, the restoration guarantees the preservation of the home of the Jewish community and the continuation of spiritual life. For the whole of St. Petersburg, the restoration of one of the most striking religious buildings will be our contribution to preserving the cultural and spiritual diversity of the Northern Capital," commented Governor Alexander Beglov.
The restoration project was agreed in 2024. In June 2025, builders began installing scaffolding. The restoration is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
The work is carried out according to the program of the Committee for State Control, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (KGIOP). The funds were allocated from the city budget.
