Hypoglycemia is a condition caused by a sharp decrease in blood glucose levels. This phenomenon can manifest itself in various symptoms during sleep, which it is important to recognize in time. On July 24, Elena Fedorova, an endocrinologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg's blade), told Izvestia about this.

"Nocturnal hypoglycemia is accompanied not only by excessive sweating, but also by other alarming signs: unreasonable feelings of panic, trembling in the body, rapid heartbeat, severe hunger, dizziness and general weakness. A person can often wake up or sleep restlessly," explained Fedorova.

The expert noted the key differences between hypoglycemic sweating and normal overheating: diabetic sweating occurs more often at the end of sleep and is accompanied by other symptoms of low sugar, whereas normal sweating is associated with the temperature in the room or sleeping position.

Fedorova listed other possible causes of night sweats that are not related to ambient temperature. For example, a person may sweat in their sleep due to infectious diseases (tuberculosis, HIV), hormonal disorders (hyperthyroidism, menopause) or cancer (especially lymphoma). In addition, sweating can be a side effect of medications (antidepressants, antipyretics) or signal psychoemotional disorders (anxiety, chronic stress).

"With regular night sweats, especially those accompanied by other symptoms, it is imperative to consult a doctor. It is important for diabetic patients to control sugar levels and adjust therapy," the endocrinologist emphasized.

The specialist recommended keeping a diary of symptoms and measuring glucose levels during nighttime awakenings to help the doctor diagnose. If hypoglycemia is confirmed, it may be necessary to adjust the diet, medication regimen, or additional examination to identify concomitant diseases.

Polina Lepilova, a general practitioner and neurologist at the Sberbank Health medical company, told Izvestia on June 19 that excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can occur even at rest, without obvious causes such as heat or physical exertion.
