Latvia's expulsion of a 98-year—old veteran is a vivid example of neo-fascism. This was stated on July 24 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at a briefing.

Zakharova noted that Riga practices a discriminatory approach towards Russian citizens, which indicates a violation of Latvia's international obligations. According to her, the expulsion of 98-year-old veteran of the Great Patriotic War Vasily Moskalyonov can be considered one of such examples.

"A very striking manifestation of the essentially neo-fascist policy of the Latvian authorities was the expulsion on July 18, 2025 of 98-year-old veteran of the Great Patriotic War Vasily Moskalenov, who managed to declare a "threat to national security" in Riga. For what? For refusing to sign a questionnaire slanderous of Russia," Zakharova stressed.

According to her, there are "revanchist motives" in the actions of the Latvian government, which prove the desire of the authorities to "take revenge" on veterans and "get even" with the Russian Federation for the victory over fascism.

She also added that the Pskov administration provided assistance in accommodating the veteran and provided him with medical care.

Earlier, on July 10, a protest rally was held in Latvia against the demolition of the monument to the defenders of the island of Lucavsala in the 1700s of the Northern War. It was clarified that the monument in Riga was erected in honor of 400 Russian grenadiers of the guard detachment of the army corps of Prince Repnin. They died in July 1701 in one of the episodes of the Baltic campaign of the Northern War.

As the deputy of the Jelgava Duma Andrei Pagor emphasized, the monument has existed for 134 years, its last restoration was in 2001, but until now no one has touched the monument. According to the deputy, this monument is an important symbol dedicated to real Russian hero soldiers.
