A new method for diagnosing the risk of fetal growth retardation and neurological abnormalities has been developed by Russian scientists. This was reported to Izvestia by the Institute of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology. Kulakov.

The analysis is based on a blood test of the expectant mother. In particular, the study of neurotrophins and SUMO proteins, which are secreted by the brain of an unborn child. Deviations from the norm in these indicators may indicate the risk of brain hemorrhages, which can lead to problems in the future. For example, fetal developmental delay, which occurs in 3-30% of pregnant women.

OCR can lead to cognitive and motor problems in a child after birth. In addition, the risk of neurological disorders, as well as delayed psychomotor development, muscular dystonia and various visual impairments is two to three times higher.

It will now be possible to identify the pathology in the second trimester, which will make it possible to adjust pregnancy management in advance and, if necessary, prepare the intensive care unit for childbirth.

The discovery was made by a group of Russian researchers with the participation of the Director of the Institute of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology. Academician Natalia Kulakov Kan.

"Previously, we saw the effects of delayed fetal development only after childbirth. Now we can intervene in advance, for example, to adjust pregnancy management or prepare an intensive care unit. This is a game changer in perinatal medicine. The new diagnostic method allows you to diagnose up to 35 diseases that can be treated after the birth of a baby, but our technology detects them in advance," Natalia Kan said.
