Canada has long been under the influence of radical Ukrainian nationalists and descendants of the Nazis. Oleg Stepanov, the Russian Ambassador to Ottawa, told Izvestia on July 23.

"The bearers of Bandera's ideology, who are still proud of the service of their ancestors in the ranks of Hitler's SS, have woven themselves like an octopus into the fabric of maple society, into business, the upper and middle echelons of power. Through their eyes, modern Canada — both the ruling class and mainstream media — looks at what is happening in Ukraine, as well as Russia," he said.

The ambassador also mentioned that Canadians "are used to trust what politicians and journalists tell them without questioning it."

Stepanov said on February 27 that Ottawa was not complying with the Interpol decision issued by the International Criminal Police against Ukrainian nationalist Yaroslav Gunko, thereby rehabilitating Nazism.

On August 22, 2024, Gunko, who was involved in the murder of at least 500 Soviet citizens in 1944, was put on the international wanted list by Interpol. At the same time, the Canadian authorities have been refusing to extradite him since last fall, despite the exhaustive evidence of his crimes handed over to Ottawa.

In September 2023, 98-year-old Gunko was invited to the Canadian parliament in honor of the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The media published a photo of an SS man being greeted with applause in parliament. Then Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Anthony Rota apologized to the public for the incident and resigned.
