Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law criminalizing the desecration of the graves of defenders of the Fatherland. The relevant document was published on July 23 on the official Internet portal of legal information.

243.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Destruction or damage of military graves, as well as monuments, steles, obelisks, other memorial structures or objects perpetuating the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland or its interests or dedicated to the days of military glory of Russia").

Thus, according to the adopted amendments, criminal liability will be introduced not only for the destruction and damage of memorials, but also for their desecration.

On May 19, First Deputy Minister of Justice Yevgeny Zabarchuk proposed to toughen criminal liability for desecration of military graves, memorial structures and facilities. According to him, since February 2022, over 370 cases of desecration of military graves and other objects erected in memory of those who died defending the Fatherland have been recorded in Russia.
