- The political scientist assessed the consequences of the adoption of the law against NABU in Ukraine
By laws directed against the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a reason to reduce aid from the West, but it should be understood that this reason may not be used. Political scientist Alexander Asafov told about this on Wednesday, July 23.
The day before, Zelensky signed a law on limiting the powers of NABU and SAP, IA Regnum reports. The law came into force on July 23.
Asafov explained that the NABU institution represents the US control over corruption in the Ukrainian government and economy on the way to European integration. Therefore, Zelensky gave a good reason for the decision to end support, but he is unlikely to be the reason for it.
"Everything depends on the position of the one who provides assistance, and not on the one who asks for it. Let me remind you that the main task of the West is to contain Russia, divert its efforts from development, including the development of trade relations around the world, to eliminate the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis. And here, in the current logic, the West will provide as many weapons as necessary to maintain the conflict in its current state," the political scientist concluded in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
Earlier in the day, mass protests began in the country against the law on the limitation of the powers of departments, reports NSN. One of the posters at the rally in the city said that Zelensky's law was a "capitulation to corruption."
On July 21, Bloomberg reported on the concern of Kiev's allies about the raids on NABU. According to the newspaper, the bureau was founded with funds from foreign allies ten years ago to investigate corruption among high-ranking officials.
