- The Bloomberg columnist pointed to the vagueness of the prospects for partnership between the EU and China
Europe is trying to improve relations with China in order to counter US President Donald Trump's "America First" policy, but due to the circumstances, the prospects for an alliance between Beijing and Brussels remain vague. This was announced on July 23 by Bloomberg columnist Alan Crawford.
"It is traditionally believed that Trump's desire to pursue an 'America First' policy in all areas — from trade to security — could lead to a rapprochement between the European Union and China. At the beginning of this year, it seemed like it was. But since then, the mood has soured," the article says.
It is specified that the EU-China summit in Beijing on July 24 will determine whether the rise in relations between the parties is a fleeting phenomenon or a harbinger of warming. It is noted that China began to cause concern in European countries 10 years ago with its purchases of critical infrastructure, such as ports. This has prompted the government to tighten investment checks.
The agency noted that now that Beijing's authority in the international arena has grown, European governments are betting on attracting factories for the production of electric vehicles and batteries from Chinese companies.
"But China is concentrating them in countries like Hungary and Serbia, which are more friendly to Beijing. This, along with many other disagreements, will not go unnoticed at the summit," the journalist emphasizes.
The meeting between representatives of the PRC and the EU, according to the observer, will become an important platform for discussing the further course of the bilateral dialogue in the face of growing geopolitical uncertainty.
The Politico newspaper reported on July 9 that the summit of the leaders of China and the EU member states scheduled for July 24 would not bring significant and concrete results. It was clarified that the meeting would have a rather symbolic meaning. In addition, it was noted that, against the background of deteriorating relations, the parties do not plan to publish a joint statement following the meeting. This departs from the norms of international diplomacy.
