- The French Foreign Ministry called on Kiev to review the law on the restriction of the rights of NABU and SAP
France shares the concern of the members of the European Commission (EU) about the law adopted in Ukraine, which almost deprived the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), and hopes that this decision will be reviewed. This was announced on July 23 by Benjamin Addad, Minister Delegate for European Affairs at the French Foreign Ministry.
He noted that it is not beneficial for Kiev to make such legislative decisions in light of the fact that Ukraine would like to become a member of the European Union (EU) in the future.
"I share the opinion of the EU, which said yesterday that it is deeply concerned about this decision. Of course, it is not too late for Ukrainians to reconsider it. When you are a candidate for EU membership, you are required to fight corruption, preserve the rule of law, respect for minorities, the political opposition and the independence of the judiciary," he said on France Inter Radio.
Addad noted that the French Foreign Ministry would be "extremely vigilant" in this matter. He added that the head of the department, Jean-Noel Barraud, had already raised this issue during a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrei Sibiga, and then Paris continued the dialogue with Kiev on this topic.
On July 22, it was reported that mass rallies were being held on the territory of Ukraine due to the law on the restriction of the rights of NABU and SAP. In Kiev, the action took place near the Franko Theater. It is clarified that one of the posters at the rally held in Lviv stated that the law of the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, is a "capitulation to corruption."
The law on the limitation of powers, which abolishes the independence of two anti-corruption agencies, entered into force on July 23. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in turn, noted that in the situation with the investigation of the activities of NABU and SAP, it is important for Kiev not to come out on its own.
