Politico pointed to the differences in relations between France and Germany
The restart of relations between France and Germany is complicated by insurmountable differences from defense to trade. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on July 23.
"The German Chancellor and the French president face a dilemma. Each of them needs to sacrifice success in their country's domestic policy in order to succeed in foreign policy," Jacob Ross, an expert on Franco—German relations, told the publication.
Speaking about the disagreements between Berlin and Paris, the newspaper notes that previously they could not come to an agreement on the issue of defense, in particular on the joint development of a new generation fighter.
According to the publication, in the field of trade, Germany stands for the early resolution of the trade dispute with the United States, as well as for the conclusion of an appropriate agreement. However, France adheres to a more cautious position on this issue.
According to the publication, in order to solve these problems, the country needs to bring its positions closer. Germany should go to the meeting on defense, and France on trade.
Earlier, on May 7, Merz and Macron announced their intention to reset relations between the states in order to strengthen the European Union (EU). According to the German Chancellor, the states will better coordinate support for Kiev and coordinate national defense issues and procurement projects more closely.
