Nikolai Simonenko, the vice-governor of the Bryansk Region, who was detained on July 22, could face up to 10 years in prison, according to Viktor Bondyakov, president of the Moscow Bar Association Bondyakov and Partners.

To do this, he said, the investigation needs to prove that Nikolai Simonenko was indeed involved in the theft during the construction of defensive fortifications in the border area.

Viktor Bondyakov also stressed that, by analogy with cases in other regions, for example, in the Kursk region, the investigation may consider the actions of not one official, but a group. Then, according to him, the case will have more difficult qualifications.

Symonenko is a suspect in a criminal case of embezzlement during the construction of defensive fortifications on the border of the Bryansk region with Ukraine. On the afternoon of July 22, his home and workplace were searched, a source told Izvestia.

"An expert examination was carried out, it was established that a large amount of construction work was carried out only on paper," he said.

Another interlocutor of the publication, referring to the case materials, noted that one grade of concrete was stated in the contracts, but in fact a cheaper one was used. Also, according to him, the number of funded and actually installed fortifications does not match.
