Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala and more than 70 other people are suspected of corruption in the construction of facilities for the 2026 Olympics. This was announced on July 22 by the Inside the Games portal, citing sources.
"The Italian Prosecutor's Office is investigating alleged corruption in construction tenders related to the upcoming Olympic Games in Italy. 74 people are under investigation. Among them is Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala," the report says.
It is specified that the local prosecutor's office is conducting an investigation into alleged corruption during tenders for public works, in particular, for the construction of the future Olympic Village.
According to the portal, Sal was accused of concealing a "conflict of interest and allegedly exerting pressure on the committee responsible for issuing construction permits."
It is noted that during the investigation, offices and private homes were searched, six arrest warrants were issued, and 120,000 euros in cash were found in the possession of a construction entrepreneur, whose identity was not disclosed.
On June 30, Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi and his wife were detained in Marseille on suspicion of corruption in organizing events in 2023. It is specified that police officers took both defendants into custody.
