The European Union (EU) will sue France over the discrepancy between waste sorting rules and the union's single market. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on July 22.

According to the publication, on July 17, the European Commission (EC) announced its intention to sue France for "overly zealous waste sorting rules." It is noted that the norms in force in the republic violate the principle of free movement of goods.

"The EU Executive Committee made this decision after repeatedly warning Paris that its mandatory waste sorting labeling is incompatible with the EU single market," the article says.

Under French law, manufacturers of certain goods are required to place a certain sorting label on their products so that the citizens of the country are informed about the correct waste disposal algorithm. These labels were introduced in 2022 and explain which parts of the product should be disposed of in a particular container.

"Since then, Paris and Brussels have been fighting for these designations. Brussels intends to harmonize labeling rules at the EU level," the publication says.

Earlier, on June 16, Ingosstrakh experts, who conducted a study in collaboration with the Financial University, found that 91% of Russians know about separate garbage collection, but only 31% sort household waste. It was noted that the main obstacle is the lack of infrastructure — only 44.6% of citizens have access to it.
