"The FT-7bgi fighter jet of the Bangladesh Air Force, which was carrying out routine exercises, suffered a mechanical malfunction after takeoff from the Bangladesh AK Khandkar Air Force Base in Kurmitolast, Dhaka," the ministry's official website says.
According to the press service, the pilot of the aircraft made every effort to "redirect the aircraft from a densely populated area to a sparsely populated area and avoid a crash."
It is noted that as a result of the tragedy, an investigative commission has been formed to determine the causes of the disaster, the details will be made public after the investigation is completed.
A Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed in Dhaka earlier in the day. The aircraft crashed at the entrance to the Milestone College and soon caught fire. According to the Daily Star newspaper, at least 19 people were killed in the incident, the number of victims ranges from 100 to 150.
