On July 21, Telegram founder Pavel Durov warned users about scammers extorting paid gifts, names and money in the messenger under threat of revealing personal data.

According to him, gifts and user names once cost several dollars, but now they can be sold for more than $ 100 thousand. There is a downside to such a jump in value, Durov noted.

"Scammers are blackmailing users, trying to force them to give away these valuable collectibles. There are also reports of channels that extort money by threatening to leak personal information," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

In May, the Department for Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK) of the Russian Interior Ministry reported that fraudsters had begun using a new deception scheme, offering to earn likes through Telegram. According to the agency, the attackers send voice messages posing as employees of large marketplaces.
