Bacteria of the genus Vibrio actively multiply in warm salt water and can pose a serious threat to human health, especially in summer. The bacterium can cause sepsis and necrosis. Vladimir Neronov, MD, an infectious disease specialist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about this on July 21.

According to him, the most dangerous representatives of this genus are Vibrio cholerae (the causative agent of cholera), Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Vibrio cholerae can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration if it enters the gastrointestinal tract. Vibrio vulnificus is especially dangerous for people with skin damage — it can cause rapid destruction of soft tissues, up to necrosis and sepsis. Vibrio parahaemolyticus often causes food poisoning when eating raw or poorly processed seafood, leading to acute gastrointestinal disorders.

Neronov stressed that even clear-looking water can contain dangerous microorganisms. The main routes of infection are mucous membranes, damaged skin, and the digestive system. The doctor recommends that you refrain from eating raw seafood, avoid swallowing water when bathing, do not swim in suspicious bodies of water, and make sure that children do not play in the water with open wounds.

"If symptoms of infection appear — festering wounds or intestinal disorders — it is necessary to seek medical help immediately," the specialist drew attention.

At the same time, Neronov assured that there are currently no officially registered cases of infection with these bacteria in Russia.

Earlier, on July 21, Izvestia reported that a dangerous Vibrio bacterium was discovered off the coast of Turkey. It was clarified that the microorganisms were found in the Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, and their appearance is associated with an increase in water temperature due to global warming.
