Fish caught in a polluted reservoir may contain heavy metals, petroleum products, and parasites, and predatory species such as pike, walleye, and perch accumulate harmful substances to a greater extent than carp. Olga Trofimova, Associate Professor of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology at the State University of Education, biologist, told Izvestia on July 21.

"Ponds with standing water are particularly dangerous, especially near sewage treatment plants and industrial areas where crucian carp often live. Fish from such places require careful heat treatment," Trofimova warned.

Ligular parasites in cyprinid fish are widespread in reservoirs with low-running water.

The expert also drew attention to freshwater mussels, which, despite their nutritional value, are able to accumulate toxins during the flowering period.

"Mussels are natural biofiltrators, so they should be harvested only in ecologically clean areas," the biologist noted.

Before cooking the shellfish, she says, it must be thoroughly cleaned of sand and boiled for at least 7-10 minutes.

The specialist recommends that you be careful when choosing a fishing spot and be sure to heat-treat the catch. Keep fresh fish and seafood in the refrigerator for no more than a day and a half.

Earlier, on June 19, hunting and fishing specialist Evgeny Latysh said that only one fishing rod with one hook is allowed during spawning, and the use of nets is considered poaching and entails criminal liability.
