The number of Russians with meningococcal infection is growing, among other things, due to the weakening of immunity and the emergence of new strains. This was announced on July 21 by Andrey Matyukhin, chief specialist in the field of infectious diseases at the Be Healthy clinic network.

"The outbreak of meningitis may be related to several factors. The first is the weakening of collective immunity due to a decrease in the rate of vaccination and the lack of timely revaccination. The second is the appearance of new strains," the doctor said "Газете.Ru ".

According to him, in some Russian cities, less common types of bacteria may be active, against which the population may not be immune. In addition, the virus can mutate and become aggressive.

The doctor also identified an increase in the number of infected people as an increase in the number of mass events and climate change, since abnormal heat or humidity affect the spread of bacteria.

In addition, global movements of people are also affected. For example, during migration and tourism, strains from countries where meningococcus is widespread may be imported.

Earlier, on July 17, Vladislav Zhemchugov, a general practitioner, immunologist, doctor of medical sciences and specialist in especially dangerous infections, said that it is necessary to follow the rules of personal hygiene, wash hands more often and maintain immunity through charging and proper nutrition so as not to catch meningococcal infection. According to him, vaccination is one of the most effective methods of preventing this disease.
