Germany's acquisition of the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) for Ukraine will not change the situation at the front for the Ukrainian army. This was stated on July 21 in an interview with Izvestia by a former special forces officer, retired Colonel Anatoly Matviychuk.

However, he noted that any weapons on the battlefield would certainly escalate the conflict.

"Any weapon on the battlefield escalates the conflict, of course. But it cannot create any critical mass, as there are very few of them," the expert said.

Matviychuk stressed that modern modifications, such as the PAK-3M, are in extremely small numbers. For example, Belgium has only two batteries, while Denmark has one. This suggests that even if Germany decides to provide such systems, they will not be able to create a critical mass to change the balance of power at the front.

In addition, the military expert expressed doubt about the intentions of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, suggesting that he could be playing a political game.

"German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is playing some kind of political game and is likely to purchase missiles for outdated PAK-2 modifications," he said.

The head of the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, said on July 20 that Germany plans to buy €5 billion worth of Patriot missiles to Ukraine. She did not specify whether this amount would be spent only on rockets or also on installations.
