Back under water: yellow weather danger level declared in the capital
On Monday, July 21, Moscow and the Moscow region were hit by a powerful tropical downpour — almost a third of the monthly rainfall fell in a few hours. Due to heavy rains, the streets literally went under water, and a yellow danger level was declared in the city. According to forecasts of the Hydrometeorological Center, inclement weather will continue in the capital region until the end of the week, but warming will come by the weekend. For more information about the complexity of the weather situation in Moscow and changes in the forecast for the country, see the Izvestia article.
The consequences of heavy rain in Moscow and the Moscow region
According to forecasters, the beginning of the week in the metropolitan region will be unstable — a cyclone from the west will bring intense downpours and thunderstorms. On Monday, up to 33 mm of precipitation may fall in some areas, which is close to 40% of the monthly norm. A yellow weather hazard level has been declared in the city.
It will rain in the capital until Monday evening, with rain, thunderstorms, and hail in places. Wind gusts can reach 15 m/s, the Hydrometeorological Center warned.
In the morning, streets and underpasses have been flooded, courtyards have turned into swimming pools, and public utilities are operating on high alert. Eyewitnesses reported heavy flooding in almost all districts of the capital. In some crossings, people found themselves waist-deep in water: a tunnel flooded at the MCD-2 Pavshino station in the Moscow region, which had to be closed to passengers.
The parking lot of the Gusarskaya Ballada residential complex in Odintsovo has completely gone under water, drivers are advised to evacuate their cars as soon as possible. Streets, pedestrian crossings, and road exits are flooded. In the south-east of Moscow, the roadway near the 16th kilometer of the outer side of the MKAD was flooded, traffic was temporarily suspended, according to the State Traffic Inspectorate. Other affected areas stand out — Zhukovsky and Ramenskoye in the Moscow region, where traffic is difficult due to heavy rains and heavy water.
The Moscow Department of Transport has warned about possible delays in ground transportation and recommends planning trips based on the changes. Drivers are advised to be as careful as possible, keep their distance and avoid sudden maneuvers. According to forecasts of the Hydrometeorological Center, the bad weather will last until 21:00 today, after which the rains will begin to weaken.
