The Economist reported on the failure of the EU mission to combat the Houthis
With recent attacks on bulk carriers, the Yemeni Houthis have destroyed the claims of the European Union (EU) countries to naval supremacy in the Red Sea. This was reported on July 20 by the British magazine The Economist.
It clarifies that despite the fact that the EU conducts an "exclusively defensive" Aspides mission in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf, their forces are insufficient to protect these territories.
"Aspides did not provide sufficient protection when the two merchant ships Magic Seas and Eternity C were attacked by the Houthis in early July," the publication says.
According to the publication, since October 2023, the volume of transit traffic in the region has decreased by 60%. The magazine cited a shortage of ships and low funding for European naval modernization programs as the reasons for these failures.
On July 8, the press service of the US State Department said that the American side condemned the attacks by the Yemeni Houthis on the dry cargo ships Magic Seas and Eternity C in the Red Sea. It was noted that the attacks were a fact of the Houthis' threat to the safety and freedom of navigation. The State Department stressed that measures will be taken to protect the ships from attacks.
