- WP reported on the US dependence on fertilizers from the Russian Federation after the introduction of new duties by Trump
The trade duties imposed by US President Donald Trump have led to global changes in the trading system, shifting the United States from its role as a leader in the global market and exacerbating its dependence on Russian fertilizers. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on July 20.
"The imposed duties have led to, apparently, unintended consequences. For example, the United States is now more dependent on Russia for the supply of carbamide (urea), a common fertilizer used for growing wheat, corn and rice," the publication says.
It is specified that in May 2025, Russian supplies accounted for 64% of urea imports to the United States, which is twice as much as before Trump introduced a new 10% tariff for most countries, including other fertilizer suppliers.
"The United States is no longer considered the leader of the global trading system. They have abandoned this role. <...> This is a fundamental change," the newspaper quotes Alan Wolf, former Deputy Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
On July 16, Trump announced the introduction of trade duties on imports in the amount of 10-15% on goods from 150 countries. He also stated that he does not seek to conclude a trade agreement with the European Union (EU). He explained this by saying that Washington would be quite satisfied with duties of 30% on all European imports.
