Former Prime Minister of Brandenburg and former head of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) Matthias Platzeck defended maintaining contacts with Russia on July 20.

"Doesn't a good defense capability also include active diplomacy on many levels and in many varieties?" Platzeck said in an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

He also stressed that economic or personal interests do not matter to him in this matter.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on July 9 that German arms supplies to Ukraine were leading to the destruction of the Ukrainian side, as well as its population. The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the German supplies will not affect the goals and objectives of the special military operation, but only strengthen the understanding of the Russian side about the goals of denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine.
