NDTV talked about the high share of Indian UPI in global digital payments
The Indian Unified Payment Interface (UPI) accounts for 50% of the world's digital transactions. This was announced on July 20 by NDTV.
"Currently, India is a world leader in the field of fast payments, and UPI is its main driver," the TV channel writes, citing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
According to the publication, in June, UPI processed transactions worth 24.03 trillion rupees (more than $1.4 billion). It is noted that this is a 32% increase in the volume of payments compared to the same month in 2024.
UPI was launched in 2016, and its advantages include security and round-the-clock availability. Currently, the platform serves 491 million individuals and 65 million sellers. There are also 675 banks connected to the system. UPI processes 85% of all digital payments in India and almost half of all digital transactions worldwide.
Earlier, on June 19, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) Anindya Novyan Bakri announced the intention of the country's authorities to develop alternative payment methods for Russians permanently residing in Bali within the framework of cooperation in BRICS. He stressed that Indonesia, as a developing young country, is thinking about creating its own digital infrastructure with prospects for its expansion in the future.
