China has developed tactics to protect against U.S. bunker bombs
Chinese researchers have discovered a potential vulnerability in an American correctable bunker buster aircraft bomb model GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOP) and have developed tactics to protect against these projectiles. This was announced on July 19 on the Interesting Engineering (IE) portal.
So, according to the materials of a study led by scientist Cui Xingyi from the Northwestern Institute of Mechanics and Electrical Engineering of the People's Republic of China (PRC), a particularly vulnerable part of this bomb is its side part.
"While the nose of the GBU-57 reflects direct frontal hits, its side parts remain vulnerable — they can be destroyed with just a few anti-aircraft shells," the article says.
At the same time, as specified in the study, the bomb should be struck strictly at an angle of 68 degrees — only then could the projectile penetrate the hull. In addition, when repelling an attack, it is important to remember that the projectiles must be aimed at a specific point in the GBU-57's potential trajectory.
The revealed tactics of countering this American bomb, which is widely used by the United States in operations in the Middle East, including in recent US Air Force strikes on Iran's nuclear infrastructure, have been called "sniper fire control."
It is clarified that despite a number of advantages, the developed strategy also has disadvantages. For example, an enemy can attack potential defense points before using the GBU-57 to strike at its target. In addition, these projectiles are characterized by the unpredictability of their flight, which is why the impact on them may be limited.
On July 2, American political scientist Malek Dudakov, in an interview with Izvestia, pointed to US concerns about lagging behind China in the arms race. According to the expert, Washington is currently involved in a large number of conflicts around the world.
