Chinese scientists have identified the cause of the awakening of dormant cancer cells
The use of chemotherapy in the fight against malignant cancer cells can lead to the spread of cancer from the primary tumor site to distant organs due to the awakening of dormant cancer cells. This was reported on July 19 in the South China Morning Post (SCMP), citing a study by a team of Chinese scientists from the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health CAS and Fudan University.
"This study provides direct evidence of cancer cells awakening at rest and reveals the mechanism underlying the detrimental effects of chemotherapy on metastasis, highlighting potential strategies for improving cancer treatment," the scientists said in a statement.
The team of scientists states that, based on the results of these studies, a clinical trial is currently underway to study the safety of combining the senolytic drugs dasatinib and quercetin with chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer, in particular breast cancer.
It is reported that tests on mice have also shown that the use of certain drugs in combination with chemotherapy can be used to stop the spread of metastases.
Earlier, on July 16, Nidal Salim, director of the Institute of Oncology at the European Medical Center (EMC), said that theranostics provides stable remission in 30% of patients and a positive response to treatment in 60% of cases. He also explained that theranostics is a field of medicine that combines molecular diagnostics with targeted cancer therapy.
