- The Federation Council warned about fraudsters calling under the guise of changing the intercom code
Fraudsters disguised as employees of service organizations began using a new way to deceive citizens, said Artem Sheikin, deputy chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy at the Federation Council, on July 19.
According to the senator, the attackers call residents and introduce themselves as specialists who allegedly change the intercom code.
"To confirm the identity, the victim is offered to dictate a text message code, which is actually needed to log into an online bank, access messengers and apply for loans," TASS quoted Sheikin as saying.
According to him, if a person refuses, a "police officer" or "Rosfinmonitoring" intervenes, who suggests installing a "protective" application and attaching the card to the phone's NFC tag. As a result, the scammers receive a virtual copy of the card and debit all funds from the account, adds "Газета.Ru ".
Sheikin noted that in the first quarter of 2025, almost every second Russian was confronted with suspicious calls, and the number of attacks through messengers, including WhatsApp (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), increased 3.5 times.
"The most alarming thing is that many citizens do not even resist, because we are talking about the safety of their apartment and family," the parliamentarian added.
The day before, the Roskachestvo digital expertise center said that fraudsters could pose as repair technicians and extort money from customers under the pretext of free diagnostics of equipment. On social networks or on online flea markets, attackers place ads for free diagnostics of equipment. They offer interested clients an online consultation.
