Soil from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant was brought to the territory of the official residence of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, which marked the beginning of a project to recycle it. This was reported on July 19 by the NHK television and radio company.

"A 10-ton truck with soil removed from a temporary storage facility in Fukushima Prefecture during decontamination arrived at the Prime Minister's residence in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo," the material says.

It is noted that the Japanese government plans to recycle soil with a low concentration of radioactive materials for use as fillers for public projects throughout the country.

According to NHK, the soil from Fukushima-1 will be recycled for the first time at the official residence of the Prime Minister.

"The Ministry hopes that recycling in the official residence will contribute to raising the level of knowledge about decontaminated soil," the publication says.

Earlier in the day, NHK reported that the Japanese energy company Kansai Electric Power Co. intends to conduct a geological survey and a number of other works in preparation for the reconstruction of the first power unit of the Mihama NPP. It is specified that if a new or replaced power unit is built, it will be the first such project after the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in 2011.

The accident occurred after a tsunami that knocked out its power supply and cooling systems. As a result, nuclear fuel melted in the reactors of three power units, which burned through the protective shells. This was accompanied by hydrogen explosions that damaged the fourth power unit. The complete dismantling of the nuclear power plant is planned to be completed by 2050.
