In France, US sanctions against Russia were called "destructive" for Washington.
US President Donald Trump's new sanctions against Russia will do more damage to Washington than to Moscow. This was reported on July 18 by the French newspaper Le Parisien, citing experts.
"They (sanctions. — Ed.) can be extremely destructive. I don't think the Americans will do that, because the consequences will be extremely difficult. This measure is a truly powerful weapon," the newspaper quoted Ulrich Bunat, an employee of the Euro Créative research center.
Another specialist, David Turtry, a lecturer at the Catholic Institute of Higher Studies (ICES), said that the Europeans no longer have any special levers of influence on Russia. According to him, the collapse of the Russian economy promised by the French government in 2022 has not happened.
"The country has reorganized itself by conducting trade and exchange with major developing countries that, for various reasons, do not want to apply Western sanctions," he complained.
On July 15, Trump announced that he intends to impose sanctions on Russia if agreements on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict are not reached. He also stressed that if he had been in power instead of his predecessor as president Joe Biden, this situation would not have happened.
