India refuses to support EU energy sanctions
India does not support unilateral sanctions measures and warns against double standards in the field of energy trade. This was stated on July 18 by the official representative of the Indian Foreign Ministry Randhir Jaiswal, commenting on the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union (EU).
"We have paid attention to the latest sanctions announced by the European Union. India does not support any unilateral measures. We are a responsible actor and remain fully committed to our legal obligations," reads a statement posted on Jaiswal's country on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
As the representative of the Indian Foreign Ministry stressed, New Delhi considers ensuring energy security to be a "commitment of the highest importance" to its citizens.
"We would like to emphasize that there should be no double standards, especially when it comes to energy trade," Jaiswal said.
Earlier in the day, the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, announced that the permanent representatives of the European Union countries had agreed on the 18th package of sanctions against Russia. The restrictions will affect the operation of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, and the EU countries have also agreed to lower the ceiling on prices for Russian oil.
