The expert gave tips on driving a car during a thunderstorm

Summer weather can suddenly deteriorate, leading to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Stanislav Chekmarev, head of the PEC: MALL marketplace, told Izvestia on July 21 how to avoid accidents in such conditions.

"In case of a sudden thunderstorm, we recommend reducing the speed by at least 30% (for example, from 120 km/h to 80 km/h), which will give more time to react when obstacles occur. At the same time, it is important to increase the distance to the car in front to 50-70 m," the expert said.

Chekmarev added that turning on the low beam will help improve visibility, and fog lights should only be used in conditions of heavy rain or fog. The wipers should be switched to the maximum mode in advance, and to prevent fogging of the windows, it is necessary to turn off the air recirculation.

In addition, in the case of aquaplaning — when a layer of water forms between the tires and the road — it is important to remain calm. It is recommended to gently release the accelerator pedal and keep the steering wheel in an even position, avoiding sudden maneuvers. After exiting the aquaplaning state, you need to continue moving with caution for 10-15 seconds.

The expert drew attention to the fact that before overtaking in a thunderstorm, it is important to make sure that the maneuver is safe and there is free space. It is also necessary to be prepared for lateral shifts of the car.

"Hold the steering wheel firmly, smoothly adjusting the trajectory. After overtaking is complete, do not make sudden changes: return to your lane smoothly, controlling the behavior of the car," emphasized Chekmarev.

It is noted that if visibility has deteriorated sharply to 50 m or less, it is recommended to stop on a straight section of road with a wide shoulder. The best places to hide are equipped parking lots or spaces under bridges.
