Colombian President Petro criticized the sending of mercenaries to Ukraine

Mercenary activity is one of the ways to rob the state. This was announced on July 17 by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

This is how the politician commented on the statement by Russian Ambassador to Bogota Nikolai Tavdumadze to RIA Novosti that the number of Colombians traveling to Ukraine as mercenaries remains at a high level.

"Mercenary work is a way to rob a country. Public money invested in the training of Colombian defense personnel is used for deadly armed conflicts in which the Colombian people do not want to participate," Petro wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The politician also called for protecting the lives of young people, from whose deaths the owners of security companies associated with crime profit.

On June 10, the 2nd Western District Military Court sentenced a Colombian mercenary to 28 years in prison for participating in hostilities on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). He is also accused of illegally crossing the border, smuggling and illegally carrying weapons, and committing terrorist acts.
