The powerful floods that are observed in Yakutia and Transbaikalia are not typical for these regions, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, told Izvestia.

"The Indigirka is one of the northernmost rivers, there are extremely rare floods. The current situation is due to the fact that in the center of Yakutia and in the mountainous regions where the sources of the Indigirka River are located, there was intense precipitation, and it accumulated in large quantities. In the next few days, the water level may still remain at a dangerous level, but there will be no increase," he said.

According to the expert, such a flood situation is quite rare in Transbaikalia. As Roman Vilfand emphasized, difficult climatic conditions have been observed in the region since March 2025.

"At the end of March, the weather was too hot and the early snowfall began. And recently there has been intense precipitation, which is also not typical for this region," he explained.

At the same time, precipitation is not expected in the Trans-Baikal Territory in the coming days, so the situation there will improve significantly, the expert believes. He also noted that in summer, any Russian regions are at risk of flooding, as this is the rainiest time of the year.
