Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation to Alexei Berest, who commanded a group of Soviet soldiers who hoisted the Victory Banner over the Reichstag in 1945. The relevant decree was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

"For the courage, bravery and dedication shown in the fight against the Nazi invaders during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, to award the title of Hero of the Russian Federation to Alexei Prokofievich Berest (posthumously)," the document says.
