The ceasefire in southern Syria and the withdrawal of Syrian troops to Damascus were the result of Israeli military actions. This was announced on Thursday, July 17, by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video message.

According to him, the ceasefire agreement announced by Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa was made possible not through negotiations, but "through force." Netanyahu stressed that Israel intends to continue to act if necessary.

"We have established a clear policy — the demilitarization of the territory south of Damascus, from the Golan Heights to the Druze Mountains. The second line is to protect the Druze in Jabal Druze," The Times of Israel newspaper quoted the Prime Minister as saying.

The Israeli Prime Minister stressed that the country will continue to protect its interests and the safety of the Druze population in Syria.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on July 16 that his country wants to maintain the status quo in southern Syria in order to prevent threats in the region. He called the prevention of harm to Druze a second interest.
