South Korea conducted defensive exercises near the Liancourt Islands (Korean name — Dokdo) after territorial claims from Japan. This was reported on July 17 by the Yonhap news agency.

The exercises took place just two days after the South Korean Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense summoned officials from the Japanese Embassy in Seoul due to Tokyo's renewed territorial claims to the islands in its Defense White Paper.

"The exercises in the East Sea (the Korean name for the Sea of Japan. — Ed.) was carried out by the naval forces and the coast guard," the agency's source said.

It is noted that compared to last year, the Marines did not participate in the 2025 exercises. According to the publication, in the past, the exercises included the use of fighter jets and the practice of landing maneuvers on the islands, but recently they have been conducted in a relatively restrained environment.

It is emphasized that Liancourt has long been a constant source of tension between South Korea and Japan, as Tokyo continues to assert sovereignty in its political documents, public statements and school textbooks.

Later, the Japanese Foreign Ministry protested in connection with the South Korean exercises.

"The exercises of the Republic of Korea are unacceptable and deeply regrettable," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

On May 25, the Yomiuri newspaper reported that the Japanese Coast Guard was firing without warning off Kunashir Island. It is specified that during the shooting, the servicemen fired 66 machine-gun shots and two flares, after which they realized that they had not issued a warning about the start of the exercises and stopped firing.
