- Karjakin noted the growing popularity of chess and the massive interest in tournaments.
Chess in Russia is showing steady growth in popularity and reaching a new level of popularity, attracting thousands of participants to tournaments. This was announced on July 17 during a round table on the topic "Sports sovereignty of Russia.": sport as a soft power" was announced by Sergey Karjakin, grandmaster, member of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy, President of the Moscow Region Chess Federation, at the Izvestia News Center.
According to him, chess continues to gain popularity, turning into a massive and truly international sport. Karjakin noted his active work at the regional level: He heads the Moscow Region Chess Federation and organizes a large-scale series of tournaments.
"In particular, we will be holding the Sergey Karjakin Cup in Domodedovo on chess day. There will also be several hundred participants. And then there will be a separate Sergey Karjakin Cup final. This is a series of tournaments. And there we want to set an ambitious target, about 2,000 people," Karjakin said.
Chess in modern Russia is becoming not only an element of sports culture, but also an important tool of "soft power" in the international arena — thanks to such events and the involvement of the professional community.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on July 16 that relations between Russia and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are gradually recovering. The President also expressed hope that after the restoration of relations with the IOC, SAMBO will become an Olympic sport. He called this type of martial arts democratic and spectacular and noted that there are many athletes in Russia who show very good results in SAMBO.
