Syria is unlikely to respond to Israeli provocations. This was stated on July 17 by political analyst Dmitry Brije in an interview with Izvestia, commenting on the Israeli strikes on the Damascus presidential palace.

"There will be no reaction from Syria. If there is an escalation against Israel, then Israel will take advantage of the situation inside the country, the unstable political situation," the source said.

He also said that the Syrian government would not be able to initiate a conflict with Israel on its own, as the United States would not allow it. However, if it occurs, Tel Aviv may attack the republic's military facilities and even try to eliminate key leaders.

"After the fall of the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, many things have changed in the region. Lebanon has weakened, and Iran's military potential has also weakened, because military installations have been attacked and key leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have been assassinated," the orientalist said.

In addition, the political scientist added that current events will negatively affect the stability of Syria, since the main task of its leadership is to attract investments from the European Union and other countries.

The SANA news agency reported on July 16 that the Israeli army launched an airstrike on the city of Deraa in southern Syria. As a result, a military target was hit near the presidential palace in Damascus.
