VTsIOM noted the growing pride of Russians in sports and Ovechkin's achievements
About 80% of Russians regularly engage in sports, which indicates not only a desire to preserve their health, but also a desire to be a part of a significant public topic. This was announced on July 17 during a round table on the topic "Sports sovereignty of Russia.": sport as a soft power," Mikhail Mamonov, Director of the VTsIOM Political Research Department, told the Izvestia News Center.
Special attention was paid to sporting achievements, which are becoming key symbols of national pride. A striking example is the record of Alexander Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals hockey club, one of the most famous and respected Russian athletes. His successes are widely admired and form a cultural code that unites society.
As Mamonov noted, sport in Russia has long ceased to be just physical activity — it is an important tool of national identity and "soft power" that can influence the perception of the country both inside and outside its borders. Ovechkin, as a symbol of sporting success, vividly embodies this trend, uniting people and inspiring new generations.
In the future, sport will continue to play a key role in shaping Russia's positive image, and the examples of such outstanding athletes as Ovechkin will serve as a motivator for millions of people.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on July 16 that relations between Russia and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are gradually recovering. The President also expressed hope that after the restoration of relations with the IOC, SAMBO will become an Olympic sport.
