The Colombian president expressed his desire to abandon the partnership with NATO
Colombia must abandon cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). This was announced on July 16 by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
"We must withdraw from NATO. There is no other way," he said during his speech at an emergency conference in Bogota.
Petro is convinced that Colombia should seek membership in another military alliance. He explains this by saying that his country cannot be associated with armies dropping bombs on children.
He characterizes such military forces as "armies of darkness," rather than as forces defending freedom. Petro also expressed a desire to join a new alliance and create an "army of light" with nations willing to cooperate.
American political scientist Malek Dudakov said on June 21 that it was not worth expecting the collapse of NATO in the near future, but the split within the North Atlantic Alliance would grow. Speaking about the disagreements within the bloc, Dudakov stressed that a significant part of the states do not want to increase military spending.
