- The US State Department announced the need for Syria to withdraw troops from the Druze-inhabited area.
To reduce tensions in Syria, the country's authorities must withdraw the military from the Druze area. This was announced on July 16 by the head of the press service of the US Department of State, Tammy Bruce.
"We call on the Syrian government to actually withdraw its troops so that all sides can reduce tensions and determine further actions. And it seems to me that this is the goal, given the nature of what happened," she said at a briefing for journalists.
Bruce also noted that US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio expect an early de-escalation and believe that what happened was "a classic misunderstanding between Israel and Syria." She clarified that Washington expects Israel to withdraw its forces as well, but did not specify where exactly.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on July 16 that his country wants to maintain the status quo in southern Syria in order to prevent threats to Israel in the region. He called the prevention of harm to Druze a second interest.
