On July 16, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a document appointing former Prime Minister Denis Shmygal as Minister of Defense.

"Today I have already signed the documents to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Denis Shmygal as the new Minister of Defense. Strategic industries will also be managed through the Ministry of Defense," Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel.

The Ukrainian leader added that the country's Ministry of Defense would oversee strategic industries, among other things. According to him, Ukraine needs to increase the production of weapons.

The day before, Shmygal resigned. He thanked Zelensky for his trust, and also expressed gratitude to the entire government team and the military.

Later, on July 16, the Verkhovna Rada dismissed Shmygal. The country's legislation stipulates that the entire government resigns along with the Ukrainian prime minister.
