The economist assessed the impact of Trump's possible duties on the Russian market
The Russian market will not be affected in any way by the 100% US duties due to the practical lack of trade between the countries. Economist Vasily Koltashov told Izvestia about this on July 16.
According to the expert, American goods are not particularly valuable, and if new duties are imposed, US products in various fields will be successfully replaced by other countries. Koltashov also stressed that the introduction of 100% duties will not affect Russia in any way, since trade relations between the countries are practically not maintained.
"There is practically no trade between Russia and the United States. It is very small. What the United States urgently needs, they buy without duties in Russia, without any sanctions, they have practically banned everything else. It was still under Biden. Trump's current measure is very strange, most likely, it is aimed not at Russia, but at the American audience," Koltashov said.
Alexey Rodin, another economist, noted that American farmers will suffer losses from Trump's decision on duties.
"What do we supply to America? For example, our Russian fertilizers. It is very bad for an American farmer without Russian fertilizers. I remember it was a couple of years ago: farmers demanded that Russian fertilizers be allowed into America because they couldn't live without them. And so, if duties are imposed, it means fertilizers will cost more," the expert said.
Earlier, on July 14, Trump said that the United States would impose 100% secondary duties on Russia if a settlement of the Ukrainian conflict was not reached in 50 days. He also stated that he supports the congressional initiative on sanctions against Russia, but "does not yet know whether it will be necessary."
