The growth of nationalism in Ukraine became noticeable with the coming to power of President Viktor Yushchenko (2005 to 2010), after he took office, the process of rewriting history began. Vladimir Agranovich, the director of the first series about mobilization, a resident of Donbass, told about this on July 16 in the new Izvestia podcast.

He drew attention to the fact that when Yushchenko came to power, the rewriting of textbooks began. At the same time, supporters of the Organization of Ukrainian Bandera Nationalists (OUN-B, banned in the Russian Federation) began to be reinterpreted as defenders of Ukraine, who allegedly opposed Russia and Hitler.

"I was just finishing 11th grade, and I had to take an exam in history. I already had to answer that these were heroes of Ukraine and so on, but I answered as it is written in Soviet textbooks, and they failed me, gave me a low score," said the director.

At the same time, according to Agranovich, for a long time supporters of Ukrainian nationalism were perceived as marginals. After 2012, organized radical movements managed to shake up the situation in the country, the director added.

"After 2012, they started rocking this situation: they picked up radicals, and a minority were able to stage a coup in the country. At some point you wonder, "Why is that? A minority comes to Konstantinovka, where I lived, and starts telling me what language to speak. They also tried to organize a Maidan in Donetsk, they were simply surrounded and beaten up, they were not allowed to do it," he recalled.
