More than six European Union (EU) countries support the use of retaliatory measures against the United States in the event that Washington imposes trade duties of 30% on Europe. This was reported by Bloomberg on July 16, citing sources.

"France's initiative to use the so—called EU instrument against coercion is supported by more than half a dozen European capitals," the publication says.

It is noted that the EU countries intend to use retaliatory measures if the European Union fails to reach an agreement with the United States by August 1.

According to the agency, these measures may include new taxes for American technology majors or restrictions on American investments in the EU.

"They may also include restricting access to certain segments of the EU market or banning American companies from bidding for government contracts in Europe," the article says.

On July 12, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose 30 percent duties on exports from the European Union from August 1, 2025. He also stressed that the figure of 30% is "much less than is necessary to eliminate the inequality in the trade deficit with the EU."
